This is an incredibly common question for any Scent Detection Dog Handler and the answer is pretty easy actually... whichever individual dog loves it!
Here at Riverland Scent Dogs we don't discriminate against breeds. We certainly have a preference when it comes to selection but that is purely to give the dog the best opportunity for success! Ultimately, that's what we are all about - we want all of our dogs to succeed!
So... what is our preference? Dogs from the sporting, herding or working types are generally the type of dog that has the characteristics we are after. Bold, tenacious, confident, physically fit and agile are just some of the top things we look for in potential new dogs.
Our team currently has the following breeds; German Shepherd, Kelpie, Koolie x Border Collie, Border Collie, Border Collie x and Australian Cattle Dog. Notice what all of these breeds have in common? Each of them has a similar breed type! They are all herding/working breeds. This increases the chances of success for these dogs and, we are proud to say, all of our dogs have made it through the process *Pats self on back*
We are incredibly proud of our dogs and our selection process. Training a top performing Scent Detection Dog is a rather complex task. This is why selecting the top candidates to recruit is vital. If we can give ourselves a head start by selecting great dogs then we make the process easier for everyone!
As always, we love answering any and all of your questions so please don't hesitate to leave us one in the comments!
